Liberia observes International Day of the Forest Today

On today, Tuesday March 21, 2023 Liberia will join the rest of the world to celebrate International Day of the Forest in Buchanan City Grand Bassa County.

The  program, which promises to be colorful,   is  expected to bring  together scores of conservation partners collaborating with the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) to ensure the sustainable management of the forest at all times.

Given its international importance, representatives of a  number of key diplomatic missions will grace  the occasion and make remarks.  FDA Managing Director, C. Mike Doryen will give the keynote address at the program.

International Day of Forests is observed annually on March 21 to celebrate forests and create awareness about the importance of the forests.

Forests cover one-third of the Earth's landmass, performing vital functions around the world. Around 1.6 billion people - including more than 2,000 indigenous cultures - depend on forests for their livelihoods, medicines, fuel, food and shelter. Forests are the most biologically diverse ecosystems on land, home to more than 80% of the terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects.

Yet, despite all of these priceless ecological, economic, social and health benefits, global deforestation continues. As a global hub for environmental governance, Geneva and the organizations it hosts, plays a role in the protection of forests globally.
