Gov’t appeals to Private Institutions to minimize Graduation Fees

The Government of Liberia(GoL), through the Minister of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism(MICAT), Ledgerhood J. Rennie, has stressed the need for private institutions to minimize graduate fees to enable all students graduate.

Speaking on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at MICAT regular press briefing in Monrovia, Minister Rennie said the request is in relation to the government perspective for private institutions to charge a minimum fee.

According to him, the world is in a difficult times and Liberia is of no exception, noting that private schools should not use the issue of graduation fees to exploit parents.

“We want to appeal to private schools coming from the perspective of the government  to think about the kind of fees they will charge per student as graduation fees,” he stated

“We appeal to the schools that they should not be profiting or try to cash out on the graduation of schools, whatever fees that they will charge must be appropriate for the kind of services that they will be given to students on graduation rather than trying to cash out these students,’’ he further stated. 

‘‘We are appealing especially to the private schools because public schools, the regulations from the Ministry of Education is that, the fees cannot pass US$50 for graduation. But with private schools, government does not have regulations and cannot control it because the law doesn’t provide for such, so we are appealing to schools not to cash out. Let them use whatever fees they have to celebrate their education after a long years of studying,’’ the MICAT boss  added. 

Meanwhile, the MICAT Boss expressed excitement over how the students along with WAEC conducted themselves throughout the process.
