MICAT Official Warns Against Misuse of Arms

The Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs at the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), Jalarwah A. Tonpo, has warned against the misuse of small arms, especially by state security, who are clothed with the responsibilities to protect lives and properties.

Deputy Minister Tonpo further warned that state security must use them (small arms) wisely and not to intimidate the citizens or as a source of causing collateral damage.

Minister Tonpo’s comments were contained in a statement he delivered Monday, October 11, 2021 at the opening ceremony of a-five-day in-country training in Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM) for state security personnel held in Monrovia.

“We must not allow the multiple functions of Small arms to be missed used. Those who are authorized to use them for the security of the state must be allowed to use them wisely and not to intimidate the citizens or as a source of causing collateral damage. We must not allow small arms to be used to induce fear and commit crimes,” stated the Deputy MICAT boss.

He asserted that the Liberian Government of Liberia(GoL), under the stewardship of President George Manneh Weah, attaches serious interest in the security of the citizens and the state, noting that the ongoing training security personnel will go a long way to boost the security sector.

He described the training as welcoming news, because according to him, PSSM program asserted s can help prevent tragedies by keeping ammunition and weapons in safe and secure storage areas.

Predicated upon this, he indicated that the lack of adequate and effective training for state security personnel could be a devastating situation and a recipe for problems and a setback to peace and security in our sub-region.

“Therefore, I like to assure you that the Government of Liberia is in full support of this initiative, an initiative that will enhance the already technical know-how of our security to save guard government's stockpile from falling in the wrong hands or getting diverted into the black market,” Deputy Minister Tonpo assured.

“As we draw closer to 2023 legislative and Presidential elections, there are visible early warning signs that your commission must not overlook. The government trusts you and your team ability to back up the effort of the security sector by making sure the illegal handling of small arms and light weapons are uncompromisingly dealt with.

Your vigilance and restless pursuit of would-be trouble makers illegally in possession of small arms must not be taken lightly as you strive to make our society a save and peaceful place. Human being will always be weaked to plan ahead of you. A classic example is the recent arrest of Mr. David Beyan, a stalwart of the People`s Liberation Party who, due to bad and ugly intend against the country, was carrying small arm and have to shoot himself in the leg just to picture the government ugly,” he, among other things, added.
