Man Arrested for “Transporting” Huge Quantity of Dangerous Substances

BARCLAYVILL, LIBERIA -A man believed to be in his early 30s has been arrested in Barclayville, Grand Kru County for allegedly transporting huge narcotic substances worth over US$136,775.00.

The suspect identified as Ankle Nallely was arrested by the drug enforcement officers in Warkpo Dobor Statutory District in Grand Kru County following a search at a local checkpoint. According to the Grand Kru County Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Commander, Augustine Wiah Sr., suspect Nallely was caught in possession with 303.9 grams of Cocaine and Marijuana with a street value of US$136,755.00, which is equivalent to LD23, 248,350.  Speaking to our correspondent following the arrest, Commander Wiah disclosed that the suspect was arrested, investigated and charged for being in illegal possession of the illegal drugs and has been forwarded to the Grand Kru Magisterial Court for prosecution.

He said their latest arrest further demonstrates their robust campaign aimed at clamping down on illicit drugs traffickers as well as abusers, asserting that the current and alarming situation is worrisome and requires drastic action to curtail and or eliminate the illegal practice dominantly among the young people of Liberia. For his part, suspect Nallely,33, denied being the owner of the dangerous substances caught on his motorbike, stating that the bag in which the drugs were discovered belongs to a passenger who boarded another bike due to the observance of one of the Covid-19 health protocols that prohibits three (3) persons from riding on a bike.

Suspect Nallely claimed that the owner of the goods and other goods asked him to drop the bag, but did not give him the exact location in Grand Kru County where he asked him to drop the bag. According to him, the alleged owner of the bag is a resident of Grand Bassa County. He   narrated that as motorcyclists, they do not search passengers’ bags before carrying them to their designated locations. Meanwhile, court authorities at the Barclayville Magisterial Court said the case transferred by officers of LDEA is above the court’s jurisdiction and have therefore forwarded the case to the 12th Judiciary Court of Grand Kru County.

But they pointed out that the suspect was sent to the withholding facility for detention while awaiting the opening of the 12th Judiciary Court for prosecution. However, the suspect was rejected by prison authorities due to the over crowdedness of their facility.
