President Weah’s Swift Directive to halt issuance of Liberia’s Diplomatic Passports unless otherwise authorized by him commendable

We wholeheartedly welcome President Dr. George Manneh Weah’s directive, ordering the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dee-Maxwell Kemayah, to immediately stop the issuance of Liberia’s Diplomatic Passports to anyone unless otherwise authorized by him.

President Weah, who also directed Foreign Minister Kemayah to immediately investigate circumstances leading to the issuance of Liberia’s Diplomatic Passport to Sheik Bassirou Kante, who was recently arrested in the U.S., further directed his Foreign Minister to submit a full report detailing a review of how Liberian diplomatic passports are issued.

The action of the President is highly commendable because it is timely and in the right direction.

The investigation is necessary as it will establish circumstances leading to the issuance of Liberia’s Diplomatic passport to Sheik Bassirou Kante, who was recently arrested in the U.S. and others who were accused of similar crime.

Against this backdrop, we call on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the leadership of Minister Kemayah to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the doers of this unprincipled act are exposed and subsequently prosecuted so as to serve as a deterrence for others.

Again, we commend the President for his swift stance and look forward to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the scrupulous execution of the Liberian Chief Executive’s directive and the submission of the outcome of the investigation within one week of the date of the President’s directive, May 10, 2022.
