Liberia’s WASH Sector Gets Major Boost As US Government Announces Support

The US Government has announced Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for WASH with Liberia being one of the priority beneficiaries.

According to a communication, Liberia is a high-priority country to the USG through USAID for assistance in safe water, sanitation and hygiene under the Water for the World Act of 2014.

Over the period, Liberia has experienced huge challenges in the sector with open defecation and poor sanitation including hygiene facilities lacking both in rural and urban communities.

However, the National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Commission, the principal government entity on WASH throughout the Republic of Liberia headed by Ambassador Bobby Whitfield, has been coordinating the WASH Sector of Liberia and supporting USAID-Liberia Health Office in the development of USAID's new funding package for WASH in Liberia.

The focus, according to the Chief Executive Officer of WASH Ambassador Whitfield, is to ensure that the population of Liberia benefit immensely from said key sector of Government which is one of the ruling establishment commitment to its people.

The total estimated value package of Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) released by USAID to Liberia is approximately US$30 Million.

Among other things, the package is expected to target countywide sanitation activity including the elimination of Open Defecation (OD) in 5 counties.

As part of the new initiative, improved governance, behaviour change, Sanitation market strengthening and financing the sector will be pivotal areas that will be captured under the program and or projects in the five targeted Counties.
