Gov’t Disburses US$500,000 to Public Works To Kickoff Construction of Overhead Bridges

The Government of Liberia(GoL), through the Ministry of Public Work, has disclosed that plans are underway for the construction of the two interchange overhead bridges in the Congo Town Belt, Montserrado County.

According to acting Public Works Minister, Madam Ruth Coker- Collins, an initial payment of US$500,000 has been provided by the GoL through the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning(MFDP) to begin initial works on the site.

Making the disclosure at the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing held on Thursday, October 14, 2021 in Monrovia, acting Public Works Minister Collins further disclosed that the overhead bridges being one of the major signature projects of the Weah’s led Government, is expected to be completed in 2023.

“I am very much excited because just yesterday, we received US$500,000 from the Ministry of Finance for the rap payment of the overpass bridges, so anytime soon, we will start the rap payment along the Congo Town corridor. The funding is a grant from the Chinese Government and Chinese Government has already hired a consultant firm that has begun its consulting work already.

So the consultant will come in and get the sample and design. This is a project that we ourselves from the Ministry of Public Works take to our heart seriously because it is our legacy project,” asserted the acting Public Works Minister.

When constructed, the two interchange overhead bridges will connect two locations, the newly constructed Ministerial Complex along the Tubman Boulevard and the SKD Boulevard-Ministry of Health Intersection in Congo Town.

Madam Collins pointed out that the construction of the overhead bridges followed a productive bilateral and technical cooperation agreement with the People’s Republic of China that has committed itself to funding the project.

She said that the move is aimed at strengthening bilateral relations with the Asian nation, noting that infrastructural development remains an integral tool toward achieving President Weah’s Pro Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development.(PAPD)

Tubman Boulevard is one of the major trunk roads in the national highway network with dual, 2-lane carriageways, 16.5m in width of the pavement and without median divider currently.

The construction of the two interchange overhead bridges comes under the heels of the recent constructed Ministerial Complex which is hosting at least five ministries and an agency including the Ministries of Education, Labor, Commerce and Industry, the Civil Service Agency (CSA), amongst others.

Some pundits say the construction of the interchange overhead bridges will not only add to the visual vista of the Tubman Boulevard, but will further ease traffic congestion in those areas.
