Enhanced Employment Opportunities Will Help Deter The Unwarranted Act!!

In series of our past editorials, we highlighted and strongly detested the growing wave of thievery in the country, particularly in Monrovia and its environs by dozens of young people who have made the snatching of cell phones and other valuable electronic devices as a career or life time employment.

We further highlighted that many of these young people, without absolutely no basic training or education that would set the basis for gainful employment opportunities either in government or the private sector, openly carry out the marketing of stolen phones and other electronic devices as if their action was sanctioned by the Government of Liberia (GoL).

In some instances, these so-called phone sellers and snatchers engage in heavy street fight, obstruct traffic, thereby causing embarrassment for business people, pedestrians, moving vehicles and offices.

What is most astonishing is that the unjustified and unwarranted action by these young people in many cases is carried out in the presence of law enforcement officers, including personnel of the Liberia National Police(LNP).

However, we wholeheartedly acknowledge some of the strides by the state security, mainly officers of the LNP from the anti-robbery division who have been leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the illegal is halted even though the young, but unskilled phone snatchers and sellers remain defiant in halting the dubious trade.

In this vein, like in the series of our past editorials, we want to again call on the GoL to enhance its employment opportunities for the youth.

With enhanced employment opportunities for the youth, we believe this help deter the young traders from the illegal street business.
