NEC gears up for Campaign Enforcement Regulations

The National Elections Commission (NEC) is expected to begin the enforcement of campaign regulations, after the expiration of its May 15 deadline.

It can be recalled that recently, the Commission ordered political aspirants to remove campaign materials from public display on May 15, by 12 midnight, or face punitive action.
The campaign materials include billboards, posters, and banners, jingles, among others.
The NEC Chairperson, Davidetta Browne-Lansanah, said:” Political aspirants failing to comply with its mandate risk punitive action during the candidate nomination process”.
On May 5, 2023, the NEC began the documentation of violations of campaign regulations and warned all aspirants engaged in pre-campaigning to desist, to avoid future embarrassment.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Office in Liberia is commending the NEC and political parties for the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on women’s participation in Liberian politics.
It said the move is a significant milestone towards greater inclusion of women in the October 10 elections.
The MoU calls for thirty percent of women’s inclusion in political activities with an emphasis on party structure.
A release quotes the UN Women as recognizing the important role of the Interparty Consultative Committee in drafting and validating the MoU.
