NEC begins 3-Days Political Parties Dialogue
The National Elections Commission(NEC) has begun a three-day dialogue with Political Parties on the implementation of the signed Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) on Gender Quota.
The workshop, which kicked off on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, will end on July 6, 2023. It aims to address the issue of women inclusion to collectively engage the parties on how far they have gone on the implementation of the 30% Gender Quota.
The strategic dialogue is being held in Monrovia at the Cape Hotel and is funded by the GIZ. It is being attended by all 46 registered Political Parties.
Speaking with reporters at the start of the workshop yesterday, the Commissioner General of Oversight at the NEC, Josephine K. Gaye, said the workshop is a follow up to see how the 30% Gender Quota is being implemented by political parties.
Madam Gaye disclosed that the dialogue is intended for all the political parties, who have met the 30% Gender Quota, to share their experiences with other political parties hoping that they will follow suit to ensure that challenges faced with are mitigated.
“Today meeting is just a follow up, we been going on the field to see how political parties implementing the MOU. The meeting is a lesson learned meeting for political parties to come and share their experiences on how they were able to get women on board to be part of their listing submitted,” she stated.
She added that since the signing of the MOU, ten (10) new political parties have registered with the Commission, saying that the dialogue will provide the opportunity for them to collectively engage the parties on how far they have gone on the implementation process.
It can be recalled that on May 11, 2023 in Monrovia, 25 registered Parties, including Alliances and Coalitions signed the MOU, which seeks to increase women political participation in the 2023 Elections.
