Liberian Agriculture Minister Leads the Charge on $650,000 Fagonda River Dam Project
In a show of commitment and hands-on leadership, Liberia’s Agriculture Minister, Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, was seen riding a motorcycle alongside Lofa County Agriculture Coordinator, Abass Mark Biaty, to supervise the $650,000 Fagonda River Dam reconstruction project.
This ambitious government-funded initiative, located in Massabolahun, Kolahun District, is expected to revolutionize irrigation and boost rice production across 250 acres of farmland.
The project, slated to begin this month, aims to enhance food security, create jobs, and establish an advanced irrigation system.
It underscores the government’s dedication to addressing Liberia’s agricultural challenges under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s leadership.
Once completed, the Fagonda River Dam is expected to provide a reliable water source to support local farmers, significantly increasing rice yields in a region known for its agricultural potential.
With Liberia relying heavily on imported rice, this project could reduce dependency on foreign supply and improve local food sustainability.
Dr. Nuetah’s decision to personally inspect the site, even riding a motorcycle to navigate the rugged terrain, has drawn praise from local residents and stakeholders alike.
"Seeing the Minister here, riding through the countryside to check on the project, gives us hope that the government is serious about helping farmers," said one farmer in Massabolahun.
Accompanied by CAC Abass Mark Biaty and staff member Mother-V, the Minister’s visit also highlighted the importance of collaboration.
Local officials and community members have been actively engaged in the planning stages of the project, ensuring that it meets the needs of those it is intended to serve.
Beyond boosting rice production, the project is expected to create jobs for local residents during both construction and farming operations.
This is a significant development for Kolahun District, where many residents depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
The government has assured the public that the project will be completed by the end of 2025. With the necessary funding already secured, stakeholders are optimistic about meeting this timeline.
The advanced irrigation system will use cutting-edge technology to distribute water efficiently across the farmland, ensuring year-round cultivation.
By supporting large-scale farming in Lofa County, the Fagonda River Dam project aligns with Liberia’s broader goal of achieving food security.
The Ministry of Agriculture has identified irrigation as a key strategy for mitigating the effects of climate change and erratic rainfall patterns on crop yields.
The project has garnered widespread public support, with many residents expressing hope that it will usher in a new era of agricultural prosperity for Lofa County and Liberia as a whole.
The Fagonda River Dam project reflects President Boakai’s vision for an inclusive, self-sustaining Liberia. It highlights the administration’s commitment to empowering rural communities and strengthening the nation’s agricultural foundation.
With continued focus and collaboration, the initiative promises to deliver transformative results for Liberia’s economy and its people.
