Decisive Step to ending Impunity …As Pres. Boakai signs WECC Document

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has taken what is being considered as a decisive step to ending the culture of impunity in the country with the signing of Executive Order #131, establishing the office of a War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia.

Ceremony marking the signing of the document was attended by government officials, members of the justice and peace advocacy community, the inter-faith community, and various victims of Liberia’s civil conflicts.

President Boakai’s decision comes in the wake of the passage of a Bill for the establishing of the WECC by both chambers of Liberian Legislature.

Speaking during the signing of the historic document, the Liberian leader stressed the critical significance of the court as a means of ensuring justice and bringing an end to the scars of Liberia’s tragic civil conflicts, which lasted for more than fourteen years.

President Boakai lauded the Liberian Legislature for its historic move in passing a resolution, which called for the establishment of the court. He also thanked the of different pressure groups, the media among others who championed the campaign for the establishment of the WECC.

Outlining the importance of his decision, the Liberian chief executive highlighted the need for unity in addressing the causes and effects of the violence that plagued Liberia.

He indicated that the justice and healing are essential for peace and harmony to prevail. He underscored the government’s commitment to the rule of law and its firm stand against impunity, noting that the establishment of the court is a significant step towards restoring respectability and integrity to Liberia.

“I want to call on all Liberians to support the establishment of the court, emphasizing that it is time to focus on building a reconciled and united nation. Remember as I always say, we have to Think Liberia, Love Liberia, and Build Liberia, and to work towards a future free from the shadows of the past,’’ he added.
