Chamber Of Mines President Kamara Positive of Mining Sector ...As Working Group Launched
The President of the Liberia Chamber of Mines (LCM), Amara Kamara, is positive about the growth of the mining sector of the country, stating that the establishment of the Mineral Sector Working Group of Liberia (MSWG) is a great step towards that.
Speaking at the official launch of the MSWG, Mr. Kamara said the initiative represents not only a significant step forward for our mineral resources but also a testament to our commitment to sustainable development and responsible governance.
He said Liberia is endowed with rich mineral resources, including gold, diamonds, iron ore, and bauxite, which have the potential to drive economic growth, create jobs, and improve the livelihoods of our citizens.
Nonetheless, the Chamber of Mines President indicated that it is crucial that stakeholders approach the development of this sector with responsibility and transparency, ensuring that the benefits of our minerals extend to all Liberians.
Predicated upon this, he said the establishment of the Group will foster dialogue, gather diverse perspectives, and develop comprehensive strategies that address both the opportunities and challenges we face.
According to him, the group aims to enhance policy frameworks, by collaborating on policies that promote sustainable practices while protecting our environment and communities.
Also, Kamara told the gathering of stakeholders that one of the group’s cardinal objectives is to encourage investment thereby creating a conducive atmosphere for local and foreign investments through transparent regulations and fair practices.
“The Mineral Sector Working of Liberia is going to embark on capacity building initiatives by developing the necessary skills and expertise within our workforce to ensure that Liberians are at the forefront of the mineral sector’s growth. The iniative is also geared to promote community engagement by ensuring that local communities are part of the decision-making process, allowing them to benefit directly from mineral resource development,” explained Kamara.
“Today, as we embark on this journey together, I urge all members of the working group to commit to open dialogue, consistent collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge. Let us draw from our collective experiences, embrace innovation, and advocate for policies that reflect our shared values and aspirations.
In conclusion, I am optimistic about the future of Liberia's mineral sector. Together, we can build a framework that is not only resource-driven but also people-centered, fostering prosperity for future generations.”
Also serving at keynote speaker and chief launcher of the group, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Mines, Energy, Natural Resources and Environment at the Liberian Senate, Grand Cape Mount County Senator Simeon B. Taylor, beseeched the MSWG for taking the work of the sector serious so as to have it yield its full potential.
He urged stakeholders, most especially government’s authorities to ensure that all monies generated in the sector are used expeditiously for the good of the country and its people.
The Grand Cape Mount lawmaker stressed the need for stakeholders to collaborate with other sectors like the labor sector and the environmental protection agency in an effort to enhance safty and maximum productivity.
He pointed out that the sector needs thorough monitoring mechanism to make certain that the sector is run smoothly, consistent with the mining law, in an effort to protect our for the benefit of our country.
By this, he added that there is a need to introduce a law that will give exclussive right to liberian miners, brokers, and dealers in the buying, licensing, and selling of all mineral (gold, diamond, etc) in the small-scale mining sector.
