Averting A Looming Disaster -Our Plea to GoL
There is an urgent need for the Government of Liberia(GoL), through the Ministry of Public Works, to put into place proper mechanisms aimed at dealing with the continuous flooding in the country, especially in Monrovia and its environs.
Against this backdrop, we plead with the Ministry of Public Works to vigorously enforce the Zoning Laws of the country in order to help address the issue of flooding that continuous to cause destruction every year, mainly during the rainy season.
As we are aware, the summary purposes of the Works Ministry are: surveying, drafting and designing construction and supervising construction contracts, and the maintenance of roads, bridges, and public buildings, and therefore, it is the responsibility of this important ministry to avert what has been described as a looming disaster.
We must always remember that every year has a rainy season, and henceforth, the urgent need to address the looming disaster cannot be overemphasized.
For us, it is undesirable and disturbing for people to suffer from flooding continuously during the rainy season.
Recent flooding in Monrovia and its environs has made many homeless and destroyed structures worth thousands of dollars.
The yearly flooding has been attributed to the blocking of drainages and illegal construction of structures on waterways and allays. This is why it is very important that the Ministry of Public Works enforces the Zoning Laws to the letter or else the issue of continuous flooding would remain unrelieved.
When the waterways are unoccupied, we believe, there will be a free flow of water through the drainages, thereby reducing the danger associated with folding.
To this end, we encourage the GOL via the Ministry of Public Works to act quickly in a bid to avert the looming disaster for the betterment of our beloved country, Liberia.
