We Embrace the Decisive Step in ending Impunity in Liberia

We wholeheartedly embrace what has been described as a decisive step by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai in signing the historic document to end the culture of impunity in Liberia.

President Boakai on Thursday, May 2, 2024 signed Executive Order #131, establishing the Office of a War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia.

Ceremony marking the signing of the historic document was attended by government officials, members of the justice and peace advocacy community, the inter-faith community, and various victims of Liberia’s civil conflicts.

President Boakai’s decision came in the wake of the passage of a Bill for the establishing of the War and Economic Crime Court by both chambers of the Liberian Legislature.

The signing of this historic document could not have come no better time than now when victims of Liberia’s civil conflict are in dire need of justice after their plea for justice was ignored by previous governments and now heeded by President Boaka’s led Government.

In this vein, we hail the Liberian Legislature for its historic move in passing a resolution, which called for the establishment of the court. We also thank all the pressure groups, the media among others who championed the campaign for the establishment of the WECC

Frankly, the court would ensure and bring an end to the scars of Liberia’s tragic civil conflicts, which lasted for more than fourteen years.

The justice and healing are essential for peace and harmony to prevail and therefore we want to underscore the Government of Liberia(GoL) commitment to the rule of law and its firm against impunity.

The establishment of the court is a significant step towards restoring respectability and integrity to Liberia.

To this end, we call on all Liberians to support the establishment of the court as it time to focus on building a reconciled and united nation.
