For “Disrespecting” VP Howard- Taylor: Liberian Journalist Taken to Task

The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), through its National Youth League, has condemned what it refers to as an “irresponsible statements” by Journalist Sekou Sheriff of Freedom FM against Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor.

It could be recalled that Vice President Howard-Taylor in a recent letter addressed to the Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, complained that she was not getting her benefits as a Vice President by the Executive.

The Vice President asserted that she does not have well-functional pilot cars and other good vehicles as well as her allowances and other benefits, something which many Liberians believed, was responsible for her boycotting of the resumption of regular session at the Liberian Legislature.

However, Sheriff, who works for Freedom FM, launched a stinging attack on the Vice President, among other things, claimed that she(VP Howard-Taylor) had given her cars to her “boyfriend.”

Addressing a news conference at the weekend at the headquarters of the party, the CDC’s Youth League through its Deputy Secretary General for Administration, Mr.Hassan Newland, called on the leadership of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) to intervene by conducting a full investigation into such act.

“While we condemn such unfounded and outlandish statements from Mr. Sheriff, we also want to categorically state our unflinching support for our Vice Standard-bearer as she remains the immediate Vice to our standard-bearer up to 2023 and beyond. We will be glad were the PUL can immediately intervene to arrest such unprofessional behaviour of Journalist Sheriff and his Freedom FM,” Newland said.

“Furthermore, the Youth League wants to call on other relevant authorities to immediately intervene as such callous comments from Mr. Sheriff have the proclivity to undermine our hard-earned peace and democracy. We will let to remind Mr. Sheriff of Article 15 (a) which states, “Every person shall have the right to freedom of expression, being fully responsible for the abuse thereof. This right shall not be curtailed, restricted or enjoined by government save during an emergency declared in accordance with this Constitution,” Newland continued.

“Consequently, we refuse to believe that “FREEDOM FM” as their name depicts will abuse the unhindered and uncensored Press freedom that has been fostered by this government by decriminalizing free speech. From the inception of this government, the president has shown his commitment to promoting free speech and creating an enabling environment for the exercise of our fundamental rights. Unfortunately, this has occasioned the abuse of such rights as we witnessed daily the use of vulgarity and unfounded allegations against the presidency, the Vice President and the government at large contrary to the exercise of responsible journalism,” he, among other things, added.
