What Caused The Deaths of 4 Liberians? –Gov’t Schedules Autopsies Today

MONROVIA,LIBERIA - The Government of Liberia (GoL), through the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), has said it on today, Monday, October 19, 2020 conduct autopsies on the remains of four Liberians who died under circumstances deemed suspicious.

According to a press release issued in Monrovia and signed by Information Minister, Ledgerhood Julius Rennie, the post mortem examination is aimed at establishing the cause of the deaths of the deceased, whose passing has given rise to public concern. The dead, Albert Peters, a former Internal Auditor of the Liberia Revenue Authority(LRA); Gifty Lamah, Research Analyst, LRA ; George B. Fanbutu, Revenue Auditor, LRA ; and the Director General of the Internal Audit Agency, Emmanuel Barten Nyeswua, all died within days of one another. The process, according to the press release, is expected to commence at 10 AM. Representatives of the deceased families, the Press Union of Liberia(PUL), the Inter-Religious Council and Civil Society organizations have been invited to witness the autopsies, which will be carried out by Dr. Benedict B. Kolee and Dr. Zoebon B. K. padeh at the St. Moses Funeral Palor. Both pathologists were trained by UNDP and internationally certified.

The government has also availed the families of the deceased the option of bringing on board pathologists of their choosing. This message has been reiterated by the authorities in the various meetings with family members. Liberian investigators have begun working with their American counterparts following an appeal by the Liberian government for  U.S. assistance. President George M Weah last week requested Liberia's International Partners to help with the investigations as a means of ensuring an open and credible process. Meanwhile, the press release added that the government continues to appeal to the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to establish the cause of these deaths and not engage in acts that could undermine the credibility of the process. It can be recalled that a fortnight ago, Mr. Albert Peters and Mrs. Gifty Lama of the LRA were found dead in a vehicle on Broad Street, Monrovia under mysterious circumstances.

Thereafter, Mr. George F. Fanbutu, also of the LRA, was pronounced dead at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital just days after the deaths of Peters and Gifty. It was reported that Fanbutu lost control of his steering on the 72nd Boulevard, Paynesville, outside Monrovia, hit a pedestrian and the car rested on the house of one Dr. Joseph P. K. Boika in the Roland Duo curve on the 72nd Boulevard. This was followed by Mr. Emmanuel Barten Nyenswah of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) who was found dead in his 72nd Boulevard Residence also under mysterious circumstances. The deaths of the four Liberians have since shock weaves across the country, with many calling on the government to leave no stone unturned in finding out what actually cause their deaths.
