In Connection With Burning of Buses, Motorbikes -18 Arrested

MONROVIA, LIBERIA - The Liberia National Police (LNP) has arrested and placed in its custody 18 persons in connection with the burning of two transport buses and four motorbikes.

It can be recalled that what has been described as a chaotic scene on Monday, November 23, 2020 occurred in the township of Garnersville on the outskirt of the nation’s capital, Monrovia, as several bikers angrily responded to the death of one of their colleagues by setting two buses ablaze. The owners of the buses also returned violence and also set ablaze four motorbikes. According to reports gathered by this paper, the yellow transport bus, commonly referred to as “Killer Bean” in the Liberian society, instantly killed a motorcyclist following collision.

The unfortunate incident, which occurred during the morning hours of Monday between the Bardnersville and Shoes Factory, was occasioned by serious violence including the throwing of stones. Several persons escaped from the melee, while several persons trooped to the ugly scene. Speaking at a meeting hours after the incident, the Spokesman of the Liberia National Police (LNP) Mr. H. Moses Carter, and officials of the Liberia Tricycle and Motorcycle Association, and the Federation of Road Transport Union (FRTUL), condemned the incident. Carter disclosed that 18 persons are undergoing investigation after they were arrested in connection with the incident.

“The Liberia National Police wishes to encourage citizens to continue their normal duty as the situation is being brought under control,” Carter stated. The President of the Liberia Tricycle and Motorcycle Association, Mr. Samuel G. Dukuly, urged members to desist from all forms of violence and address issues through peaceful resolution. The Monday’s incident, which drew the attention of several onlookers and passersby, is not the first of its kind in the country. It could be recalled that during the regime of former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, similar horrible incident also occurred along the Somalia Drive Road, which resulted to the death and subsequent burning of a yellow bus or “Killer Bean”.
