The meeting took place at the Headquarters of the NEC in Sinkor, Monrovia. The NEC is an autonomous agency in Liberia that supervises the national elections of the country.
Our sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, divulged that authorities of the NEC told the leaders of the political parties during the meeting that the election as scheduled will not take place, citing the COVID-19 Pandemic in the country as the reason. However, our sources added that the NEC authorities did not disclose a new date.
Many of the leaders of the political parties that attended the meeting are said to have expressed shock that the NEC will provide such information without proper explanation as to what is being done by the Government of Liberia(GoL) to prevent a constitutional crisis when the election is not held this year.
They reportedly expressed fear of an imminent constitutional crisis on account that the health crisis is being projected to end globally in 2021.
In the absence of the election of the 15 senators, whose mandate will expire in few months, the government will come to a complete halt owing to constitutional crisis.
So far, authorities of the NEC are yet to formally announce its decision to the public as made known to the leaders of the political parties during the yesterday’s meeting.
They demanded a written document from the NEC detailing the reason for the postponement and when a new date will be announced.
