Murder Convict Williams Openly Apologizes In Court For Killing Journalist Brown

The judge of the 11thJudicial Circuit Court in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Nancy Sammy has sentenced Jonathan Williams to life imprisonment for killing Liberian journalist Tyron Brown.

Judge Sammy decision to sentence Williams for life was based upon a pre- sentence investigation conducted by the probation service of Monsterrado County.

Section 31.5(1) of the criminal procedural law, P.402 requires that a pre-sentence investigation be conducted as well as a sentence hearing prior to the imposition sentence and Monsterrado County being the County from whence this case emanated and the defendant also being a resident of the said county, Judge Sammy saw it fit that the investigation be carried out in Monsterrado.

“In view of the facts narrated above, the defendant having been adjudged guilty of the crime of murder, a felony of the first degree, in keeping of section 74.1 of the Penal Law, court being satisfied that no evidence was proffered during trial to establish the existence of the aggravating circumstances enumerated above, the defendant is hereby sentenced to life in prison consistent with section 51.3(1) of the Penal Law of Liberia,” said the judge.

Judge Sammy ordered the clerk of court to prepare commitment and place same in hands of the sheriff of court to have Defendant Williams remanded to the Tubmanburg Central Prison, where he shall serve his term of prison.

She further ordered the clerk to inform the Superintendent of the Tubmanburg Central Prison about the court’s decision.

Judge on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 handed down a guilty verdict for Williams, who in 2018 stabbed Journalist Brown to death several times at his residence and dumped his body in another community in the Paynesville suburb of Monrovia.

She ruled that prosecution provided convincing evidence to prove that Williams committed murder.

At the same time, Defendant Williams said he killed Journalist Browne but said he did so for self-defense.

The convicted murderer expressed regret that the young Journalist’s life was taken, stating that it was never his intention to take away life.

It can be recalled that on June 5, 2018 Defendants Jonathan Williams, Caesar Kennedy, Ernest Kermu, Alice Youti, Edwina Youti, Massa Kennedy and Joanna Brace well we're arrested and later indicated by the Grand Jurors for Monsterrado County for allegedly committing the crimes of Murder and hindering law enforcement.
