Residents elated over “oil discovery” in Frog Island community in Bong

Some residents of the Frog Island Community in Gbarnga, Bong County are rejoicing that they have struck it rich with the “discovery of oil” along a river that divides the city into two halves called Jor. The residents, including Solomon Mulbah, Amos B. Sackie and Korpu Saah, explained to the Liberia News Agency(LINA) recently that some time ago, while digging along Jor River in Gbarnga City to mold dirt bricks to earn a living, they came across what appeared to be “crude oil” in the area.

According to one of the sand miners, Solomon Mulbah, whenever they are digging, the oil keeps floating above the water, noting that some diggers have fetched one or two gallons of the liquid to use for lighting fire.
For his part, Amos B. Sackie disclosed that some individuals believed to be from an oil company visited the Frog Island Community on Wednesday ,along with Gbarnga City Mayor Lucia Herbert and put an immediate halt to sand mining and block moulding in the area.
The residents further stated that the area they usually mine sand and mould dirt bricks is not the only place where the oil has been discovered, but along the entire Jor River in the city as well, beginning from the Gbarnga Central Prison downward.
Meanwhile, a mother of 12 children, Korpu Saah who resides a stone’s throw from the place the residents have been mining sand, said if it is proven that what is being discovered is truly crude oil which may require their relocation, she would like for government to car her children and the county at large.
Madam Saah also named road construction, schools, housing facility and educational opportunities as some benefits the residents want from the “crude oil,” adding, “We were told that if oil would be mined in the area, about five communities will be affected, including Frog Island, Rubber Factory, Civil Compound and Gborveh Hill.
Other sources say crude oil experts are expected to visit the site on Thursday to further study the purported oil discovered.
But one version of the story says the area where the “oil” is being “discovered” was many, many years ago the site where the Liberia Electricity Corporation operated a large power generator, expressing the likelihood that what is now being labelled as “crude oil” could be spilt oil that seeped underground and is now covering the water surface.
