In 2020 Special Senatorial Election 103 Losers in Waiting

MONROVIA, LIBERIA - It has been discovered that out of the 118 qualified Senatorial Candidates, there are 103 of them who are considered as losers in waiting.

The reason is only 15 seats are up for grasp in the ensuing much publicized 2020 Special Senatorial Election, suggesting that the election is meant for the election or reelection of a senator per county. With this, 103 candidates are considered as losers in waiting. However, the 103 losers in waiting will be identified following the official announcement of the election result by the NEC, which is the body responsible to announce official results of elections in the country.

It can be recalled that the NEC on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 officially released the final list of candidates for the 2020 Special Senatorial Election. According to the NEC, a total of 118 candidates have been qualified to contest the Special Senatorial Election, which is slated for December 8, 2020. Out of the 118 qualified candidates, there are 20 Female Candidates, 98 Male Candidates, 44 Independent Candidates and 74 Political Parties/Coalition/Alliance Candidates.

The publication of the final list of candidates and the opening of campaign period for the Special Senatorial Election was originally scheduled for October 10, 2020. However, on October 9, 2020, the Supreme Court, which is considered as the final arbiter of justice in the country, ordered the Chairperson of the NEC, Madam Davidetta Brown Lassanah and her Deputies on elections matters to immediately put halt on the publication of the final list of candidates following a writ of Mandamus filed by Mulbah S. Jackollie, a senatorial aspirant through his legal Counsel, Cllr. JallahBarbu.

By this order from the Supreme Court, the NEC put halt to all proceedings and or actions on the listing and publication of final list of candidate spending outcome of the hearing on the matter. On Tuesday, November 17, 2020, the Supreme Court lifted the stay order placed on the publication of the final list of candidates for the Special Senatorial Election and other election activities. Meanwhile, the NEC, through its Chairperson, Madam Davidetta Brown-Lassanah, on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, officially announced the opening of the 2020 Political Campaign Activities for the Special Senatorial Election and the two bi- elections in Monsterrado County Electoral District #9 and Sinoe County Electoral District #2 respectively.  

Chairperson Brown-Lassanah told journalists at a news conference that the campaign will runfrom November 18, 2020 and end 24hours before the polling day. She called on all candidates and their supporters to go about the campaign activities in a peaceful manner. "Avoid bitter exchanges and show respect to each other as you go about with your political activities in line with the code of conduct concerning your campaign activities," she urged. The NEC chairperson pointed out that the NEC takes seriously the submission of campaign schedules by all political parties and independent candidates  as per the campaign requirements issued to all aspirants during the nomination period.

She mentioned that the commission will give full priority on first come first serve basis, based on all political parties and independent candidates who have already submitted their schedules. "No two political parties or candidates will be allowed to campaign on the same day," she, among other things, added.
